  9. The solid fuel burns along the surface that is exposed to air. Once started, it continues to burn until it's exhausted. The only way to control how fast it burns is to change the amount of surface area that is exposed. The SRB motor is a long hollow tube that burns from the inside out. The forward segment is shaped like a star with eleven points, instead of a circle like the rest of the segments. This exposes more surface area allowing the burn to be more intense at lift-off, producing a more powerful <a href="glossary">thrust</a> -- just what the Shuttle needs to get off the ground.
